This movie is, from beginning to end, a story about people PRETENDING TO BE THINGS THEY ARE NOT:
The cop cracked up to be a big hot-shot is in fact a murdering bum.
The man appearing to be a nerve-frazzled BUM, meanwhile, reveals himself as sensitive and honorable, and he is secretly a COP.
WHY DID THIS MOVIE MAKE SUCH AN IMPRESSION ON OBAMA…?
Because the movie's treatment of the constant need to cast oneself in a diametrically opposite role to one's actual nature struck such a amiliar cord in Obama, who in Dreams of My Father wrote with reckless honesty about his brief time at a Wall Street investment bank:
"I felt like a rebel, operating from behind enemy lines…"
