A hugely controversial Russian law banning curse words in films, theatre, the media and arts came into force on Tuesday, part of a Kremlin-backed drive to play up traditional values and root out swearing.

The legislation, wich was signed off by President Vladimir Putin in May, imposes hefty fines on offenders -- up to 2,500 rubles ($72) for individuals and up to 50,000 rubles ($1,460) for businesses.

Movies featuring obscenities will not be issued a distribution licence, while traders will now be obliged to warn consumers about swear words.

If this all was arising out of a genuine new consciousness of the Lord, that would be one thing.

But they wouldn’t have to ban any dirty movies then. Movie houses would stop showing them of their own accord, and people would stop watching them of their own accord.

This looks like Putin setting himself up to look like a savior. I fear Greeks even when they bear gifts.

10% right doesn't make up for the 90% wrong about Russia.
It does make you step back and wonder what's in their Vodka though.

It’s what you might expect in a land ruled by an emperor. At least in theory, Russia had become a constitutional democratic republic. A strongman who is capable of giving you what you want can also take it all away and/or give you what you don’t want. Much better that it arise out of the organic work of the Lord.

It’s like vodka. You can make it illegal, but you can’t make it unpopular.

While Russia being a petrostate manages to fill state coffins through oil revenue it is not quite as rosy as you seem to think. Currently Russia has 13% income tax, but on top of that there is 30% payroll tax. Russia is notoriously bad place for doing business due to their huge corruption.

Just look at the Hermitage Capital Management/Magnitsky case - Russian IRS in cohorts with criminals steal hundreds of millions from an American company. When company lawyer goes to the police to file a complain the thieves themselves are assigned to investigate the case, lawyer is thrown in jail where he is held without a court for almost a year (1 year is maximum to be held without a court in Russia) and dies under suspicious circumstances just few days before the year is up. Through some miracle the personal fortune of families of investigators grows by $50 million after that.

And we thought Russia was the enemy when we have the enemy right here in our own country, they're called liberals.
