There’s something about this time of year. Perhaps it’s because MPs and school children are gearing up for their holidays, or incessant televised sporting events give a sort of generalised carnival-type feel, or simply the fact that it’s so uncharacteristically hot – but current affairs always goes a little bit bonks in summer. Some of the news items they manage to dig up during this season defy belief. And winner of "most fist-munchingly ridiculous story" must this year be awarded to the ongoing saga of Jeremy Meeks.
For those unfamiliar, Meeks is an American man recently arrested in relation to gang-related crimes, including possession of illegal fire arms. A police officer involved in his arrest published Meeks’ mug shot on Facebook, for the delectation of users who might, like her, notice that he is rather easy on the eye. Facebook proceeded to entirely lose its cool; the photo garnered more than 100,000 "likes" as well as charming captions such as “wanted, in bed or alive”.
The latest instalment sees Meeks, a convicted felon, reportedly being offered a modelling contract worth $30,000. Apparently, the combination of his chiselled cheekbones and penetrating blue eyes, along with his neck and facial gang-branding tattoos are SO hot right now. Agency Blaiz Models have predicted he will become fashion’s new darling, gracing the catwalks of Armani, Versace et al, despite having as far as we know zilch experience in the field of modelling (and as a former model of extremely limited success I can confirm that the profession is harder than it looks).
The Meeks story is one of those that's initially quite amusing (provoking an "aw, what are we like?" sort of reaction). That is, until one actually thinks about it properly, upon which it becomes at best disappointing and at worst downright disturbing.

Meeks got an agent after his mugshot hit the wire. A gal named Gina Rodriguez who’s a former porn star who has other celebrity clients. Among them, V. Stiviano, Donal Sterling’s former conniving girlfriend.
The trashy women of society find tha bad boy gangsta felon of color with the possibly big penis exciting. They are your big-time Obama supporters and the trash of the earth. You can just about guarantee everyone of them will have tramp stamps front and back.
It seemed to work for Leni Riefenstahl.
Apart from the little scar/blemish/tattoo by his left eye, he looks like the kind of guy you’d see in a lot of ad campaigns.
