VENICE, FL (CNN) " A 73-year-old veteran says he was fired from a Cracker Barrel restaurant for giving a needy man a few condiment packets and a corn muffin.
He admits it was against the restaurants rules, but says he thinks it was the right thing to do.

And they are pretty nice muffins... I have dined there before. If I’d been the manager I might have first asked him if he wanted to donate to a muffins for strangers fund, maybe I’d even match the donation myself. To somehow get around the stealing issue. And donated muffins would have to be accounted for. Sometimes employers can get locked into rigidity due to lack of imagination, or maybe fear.
He admits it was against the restaurants rules, Guess theyre not teaching how to punctuate possessives, either. Atrocious
It also seems that almost everyone on FR thinks that one makes a common or proper noun plural by adding an apostrophe and an "s." Hint, folks: you just add an "s" in most instances. The apostrophe is NOT NEEDED.
Indeed, kind sir-glad to see there are more here with a sense of humor than I realized-I don’t think we should take ourselves too seriously...
Are you calling this brave, compassionate American warrior hero a liar?
Okay: Don't steal on a continuous basis or you will be fired.
Great idea, because a restaurant can never have too many stinky bums hanging around looking for handouts.
Lying is willfully telling an untruth-making excuses and ignoring rules is no such thing-but it isn’t appropriate behavior for an adult.
My husband’s job for 30 years was being a soldier-please do not be sarcastic about, or dismissive of military veterans-it is not what we are talking about here-being a veteran has absolutely nothing to do with what the guy at CB did or did not do.
Tell that to the families of veterans coming to his defense for that very reason. They are playing the veteran card or it wouldn't be mentioned in the news articles.
Retail companies seem to be quite rigid when it comes to these issues. Probably the manager did what Corporate expected him to. Well, now they’re going to lose business big time for the next week over 5 muffins. Was it worth it? I don’t think so.
The problem with this chain - aside from the fact they seem to dominate highways when travelling - is that the food STINKS. It is unutterably terrible and one is forced to eat here or starve on the road, lol! The only saving grace is their little store with the fun items for sale (without or with Duck Dynasty items - depending on the day of the week, apparently or which gay group is complaining!)

He admits hes been written up before. Two years ago for getting a fountain drink on the job and a second time for giving a cup of coffee to woman. He claims she actually paid for it. Rules are rules. Its a rule. They legally can do this because I did break the rule, Koblenzer said.

Could be or could just possibly view it as so small of a token as to be immeasurable...either way, he was stealing...not a good virtue and one that could mean he wasn’t just taking muffins to the manager.
It is a principle thing...if one is taking a muffin today, what else has been taken in the past or could be in the future?

He admits he’s done it before and the manager is in a stuff spot here because if he knows Koblenzer has taken things in the past, what doesn’t he know about or what is the potential in the future?
Not being nasty about it. But these are not his to give unless he paid for them...why couldn’t he have paid the $1 or so for the soda, the $1 or so for the muffin and likewise the coffee? What else has he “given” away that the manager is unaware of or that he hasn’t admitted to?
This is stealing...I don’t see the “nuance” in that at all.
Hmmm...proofread is your friend and I notice the grammar police are out...
Let's try it again...
"...from the manager's perspective, not a good virtue and one that could mean he wasn't just taking muffins."
I’ve only had to eat there once-a co-worker insisted on taking me to lunch there last year-and it was mediocre at best-starving is the only way I’d eat there again...
Playing any card is ridiculous and does no credit to anyone, no matter the side they are on.
I’ve never eaten there, but I have been inside them in the course of my work. They were clean.
I don’t enjoy going out to eat. Mrs. Chandler is an excellent cook and I prefer even her leftovers to restaurant food.
Nobody’s reported a deluge of stinky bums here. You assume too much.
Standardization is not as uniform here as it is for a chain like McDonalds. I tried one of their recent dumpling desserts in two places. It was great at one, quite cardboardy at the other.
You missed the point. If you start start feeding stinky bums at a restaurant, you will end up with an ever-increasing number of stinky bums hanging around. Regular customers will skip your restaurant and eat at the bum-free Olive Garden across the street.
