They told their chief/sheriff that they desperately needed all sorts of hand-me-downs from Delta Force and he/she conceded. Now they have to justify having all of it around.
In my experience, unless its a hostage/barricaded gunman type thing, a simple unassuming knock on the door was more productive than anything else.
You know, I think that's very true. One night in the late 1990s, I had a team of police officers knock on my door. They advised me they were in pursuit of a burglary suspect that had been seen fleeing over the tops of backyard fences in my neighborhood. They wanted to let me know that armed officers with flashlights would be coming into my backyard. They asked me to remain inside and away from windows. They were extremely professional. They even knocked on my door again, about a half-hour later, to let me know that my yard was safe, they were leaving, and to please call them if I saw or heard anything suspicious. It never occurred to me to do anything other than follow their instructions, and to thank them sincerely. I doubt anyone else in the neighborhood reacted any differently than I.
Today, given exactly the same circumstances, I would be terrified, more of the police than of the burglary suspect.
