JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Ridgeland police chief Jimmy Houston confirms that Attorney Mark Mayfield has been found dead at his home in the Bridgewater subdivision.

We're told he suffered a gunshot wound.

It is being investigated as a suicide.

In May, Mayfield was arrested and charged with conspiracy in relation to a political scandal.

The 28-year-old blogger, Clayton Kelly, allegedly went into a nursing home and photographed the bedridden wife of Republican U.S. Senator Thad Cochran without permission and posted an image online as part of an anti-Cochran video.

It's not clear the exact role that Mayfield played in obtaining or spreading the photo.

Mayfield was a Board member of the Central MS Tea Party.

It sounds to me as thought all Mayfield did was contribute some money.

Dunno.

It’s impossible to say whether the photo-taker realized how stupid of an act it was and offed himself out of shame...being bipolar (or whatever) as another poster said,

or realized that he may be subject to criminal prosecution, though I doubt that has any legs.

Or I suppose one could believe that a fellow Tea Partier killed him and made it look like suicide for the damage that was done.

I don’t know how you can know. It’s interesting what facts or factoids or factoidettes people pick out as the things they perceive as real while discarding everything else.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound snarky. That was nice of you to redirect things back to the truth.

I have precious little time to spend on news and politics. I tend to get grumpy when I have to wade through lies to get to the truth, and then try to guess which is the lie and which is the truth. I wasted what little time I had yesterday on lies, and never did find out the truth. Eventually I just gave up trying to figure it out. I wish that people who don’t know what’s going on would stop making crap up and pawning it off as the truth. If they don’t know, why don’t they just lurk until they find out?

I’m sorry I snapped at you. I shouldn’t have done that.

Leave the personal family members out of it in the election cycle. Could have made the point but without displaying a pic of the in-firmed wife.

Could be, but I think all he did was be a member of a Tea Party group.

The photo taker isn't dead.

Or I suppose one could believe that a fellow Tea Partier killed him and made it look like suicide for the damage that was done.

This long time Republican who was well respected for his integrity killed himself in his garage over something he did not do. I am speculating that this man’s despair had more to do with the realization that the corrupt will do anything and take down anyone who gets in their way.

Haley and Co. picked people off one by one in order to squeak out a slight victory. They had to seek outside help and use a lot of lies to do it. And for what?

When I read the Clarion Ledger story on this, another link showed in the list at the bottom of the page. It was a story about an ophthalmologist named Mayfield who died in prison in Jackson a few weeks ago. It was interesting.

>> Since when does photographing the wife of a public figure require authorization? <<

When she’s in a nursing home, totally unaware of her surroundings and basically in a vegetative state.

In addition, Mississippi law makes it a felony to “exploit” anybody defined as a “vulnerable” adult.

Correct.

I see now he didn't take the photos...I guess the charge is spreading them around.

I like the way you think. Many jump to programmed conclusions too soon. This could have been a suicide ... or a homicide. I don’t know. I just hope it gets sorted out and justice is served. I also hope this election is reversed. That would be a sweet ending

Now this is somewhat unexpected of Thad Cochran, conspiring with democrats to undermine the Mississippi primary process is one thing, but murder?

I agree with everything you said, but I’m wondering what crime was committed by doing that. Trespass? Maybe. Civil liability? Possible. But what crime?

I don’t know factually, but it’s more than similar to an illegal wiretap. Some states require consent by the recorded party. Some don’t. I don’t know offhand which flavor MS is.

Trespass is possible, I suppose, but usually any significant penalty from a trespass violation requires the intent to do harm to the property or to persons on the property. Not just taking a shortcut across your land with no other intent than to save a few steps. Was the intent of the picture-taker to do harm? I suppose. Measurable? How? Moot, since we assume that the intent was to damage/harm Cochran?

OTOH, sometimes the penalties for illegal wiretaps can get into big numbers.
