They "say" the tapes are overwritten after 6 months. I suspect that is not the entire story. They are probably overwritten, but a backup is likely archived at least semi-annually.

Keeping 6 months of data is not "disaster recovery". If a disaster happened and all you could recover was the past half a year....you still have a disaster.

Exactly. A six month tape is simply a retention policy. Its a simple backup. Disaster recovery is far different.
