BLUE BELL, Pa., July 26, 2012 – Unisys (NYSE: UIS) announced today that it has been awarded the Enterprise Storage Acquisition task order from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide private cloud-based storage for the agency’s information records.
This task order, awarded against GSA’s Alliant Government-wide Acquisition Contract, has a one-year base period and nine one-year options and is potentially worth up to $139 million over 10 years, if all options are exercised. It includes pricing for each year based on the IRS’s estimate of its storage requirements.
Under the task order, Unisys will initially acquire storage assets now owned and managed by IRS and will manage the more than 7.5 petabytes of storage space currently in multiple IRS data centers and facilities. Unisys will then plan, build, deploy and maintain a new IRS storage environment, transitioning those assets to a private cloud-based storage-as-a-service model in which the agency will pay for storage capacity as needed.

Think of this... Suppose that there is a hostile work environment or racial bias lawsuit, and plaintiff asserts evidence was in specific emails from a specific time frame. How long would it take for a sharp lawyer in front of a judge to compel production of same or convincing and documented PROOF that it could not be produced?

Ted Davies talks longevity, Unisys’ comeback
Ted Davies has spent nearly six years at the helm of Unisys Corp.’s federal business, and in that time frame has become one of the longest serving leaders of a major federal business in the market.

WT: How is the shift to the cloud changing the market?
Davies: As a systems integrator, you used to think: I’m going to take these four technologies, put them together and deliver them. Now, you might be taking different providers of different services and integrating them. It’s a new role for the systems integrator.
The business model is different. In the past, you’d accumulate your cost, add your fee, and there it is. Now agencies want to pay by the drink.
WT: Can you give me an example?
Davies: The IRS uses huge amounts of storage and they want to keep data in their own data center. But we won a contract in 2012 to provide storage to them on a consumption model.
With our partners, we buy storage equipment and put it on the floor at IRS. We manage the entire storage environment, but they only pay by the storage they consume. In the past, they were buying tons of boxes and sticking them on the floor whether they used them or not.
WT: But that means you are bearing the upfront costs?
Davies: It’s an interesting model. It shifts [the agencies] capital expense dollars to operating expense dollars. They just write us a check each month for the storage they use.
For contractors, it affects your balance sheet, and it affects the way you bid and the way your cost of capital accumulates. It’s a big shift, but we are figuring it out.
We’ve learned a ton on the first couple of these we’ve done, and we’ve gotten better. We don’t have it slam dunk down yet, but I think we’re ahead of some of our competitors.
The IRS calls this a 10-year partnership, and our leadership is fully engaged in delivering, and I think that is a competitive differentiator for us.
Option to renew on a yearly basis.
Cloud storage is not brand new. There is some evidence in the Sonasoft revelation that it has been used for a while. Unisys also got a piece of it.
How much more is there?
Where is the IRS vault? Don’t they do redundant?
They could have hired Ed Snowden for a couple mil and a boxcar-load of flash drives...
As d Boehner & crew won’t mind a bit. It’s not as if they’re out to defend conservatives’ rights.

Third, CDW has recently saved the IRS millions of dollars by eliminating its use of IBM tapes in favor of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. These devices, which are no bigger than a tissue box, store the equivalent of over 1,500 tapes, providing a fast, secure means of transporting data between mainframe centers and the CDW environment. By using NAS devices, CDW staff are now able to move, stage, process, and load data in less than one tenth the time it took when using tapes. Finally, CDW has been an important part of a renewed effort by the IRS to develop a modernized data architecture to support enterprise transaction, operational, and warehousing needs. CDW is managed by a small organization with a limited budget but is having a big impact on IRS enterprise decision making.
SO, in 2007 IRS was moving away from tape storage. Yet in 2014 they state (under oath) that they are reusing tape cartridges every six months.
The whole thing is a cover-up of who Lerner was sending emails to and what their response was to her.
And .. I’m guessing .. Valerie Jarrett’s name is mixed in with some of those emails; or another of Obama’s handlers.
