I’ve had the extreme misfortune to have to attend two funeral at the local Presby Church for my neighbor. First for his wife, and now a year later for his teenaged son. I have never felt such a cold, uncaring services in my entire life. There he was, the suede shoe minister replete in his very expensive suit all wired up with his boom mike. At the back of the room ( I won’t call it a chapel) was his sound guy running the sound board and all the video displays. Felt like I’d just dropped in to a rock concert. The other thing that I know is that this particular “church” goes out of it’s way to trash all the other churches in town, and won’t let a youth group member hold an office in their youth organization if he or she is dating outside the faith. I’ll just bet Jesus isn’t pleased.

Many modern church buildings with large chapels will run sound and projector systems. They are but media. They cannot make a service fundamentally bad or good of themselves. What is being presented upon them makes the difference.

What you describe is vibes that come close to cultishness. It can happen in any denomination.
