I have a question for Alexis C. Madrigal of The Atlantic. Were you watching AMC's Halt and Catch Fire last Sunday? I have to ask because your humble correspondent has the suspicion that you watched and took note of the spaced out character of Cameron Howe, a genius computer programmer who enjoys playing video games and having her ears perpetually plugged in to a Walkman playing loud Hard Rock music. On Sunday's episode, Cameron was walking around downtown Dallas while spending the money from her first tech company paycheck when she met some homeless drug addicts in an alley. So with her "urban sensibility" she then rents them a hotel room where they all party down and they show their appreciation by giving Cameron a really ugly amateur tattoo on her arm.
It is with this in mind that I suspect that Ms. Madrigal, trying to dream up a magazine storyline, conceived the the idea that most computer programmers have the same tastes as Cameron Howe and prefer city living in contrast to those "yahoo" conservatives who would rather live in more quiet areas. The result was the appearance of a stunningly ridiculous Atlantic article, Why Conservatives Might Be Left Out of the Next Wave of Tech:

Ha! If anything, the lessening need to be physically co-located with your peers will drive a lot of this work out of the liberal-infested urban areas.
Maybe it’s because conservatives loath living in a cesspool of Leftist moral filth. Look at the decay in America’s loser cities, living off the taxes extorted by the federal government from better places to live.
Another reason conservatives avoid cities is that they will be destroyed, as cities have been throughout history. Blow up power plants, bridges and major highways, and the cities are finished. Modern cities are overly reliant on technology for such basics as drinking water and so are more vulnerable than ever.,
Suburbs are what liberals mock - until they grow up and move there.

Curious what you saw .. because I saw something after only a few minutes into the first episode; was this the latest attack against the computer companies in America ..??
Couldn’t even get through the entire first show .. decided I didn’t want to watch it.
The other supposedly “successful” series has been an attack upon our CONGRESS. While the current Congress leaves a lot to be desired, I believe the main character is the “Speaker of the House” .. which I suspect is a direct attack against Boehner.
Don’t watch that either.

Yeah, I had to laugh at that. One of the most LAUGHABLE and ridiculous plot line premises ever. Also note this supposedly took place in 1983 when the danger of dirty needles was already well known so she is going to voluntarily get tattooed by a drug addict? How many times was that needle used before she was tattooed with it?
You were lucky because you missed a scene worse than partying with drug addicts. It was so bad I had to put my hand in front of my eyes to avoid seeing more.
The next tech wave will be “caught” by people who are where they want to be, not where they have to be. Might be a city, might not.
Who would want to live in a city, especially a large one, when the economy falls? There would be no way to escape then, and the ravaging of anybody and everybody’s property by thugs and hoodlums would be terrifying. I lived in NYC for 6 years. It was a great time to be there, and I was young and going to school. No place to raise a family, and the day-to-day street mischief was enough to daily remind me that it was not a place to settle. Three times I forgot and carried a purse. All three times I was mugged. No, thanks!
So, what was the scene I fortunately missed ..??

With the price of food skyrocketing I guess the techies in the cities can always create themselves a hologram so they can see the food us hicks in the sticks are eating.
