There will be always someone's boots on the ground. The plan was that Iraq's soldiers will be those boots, as the USA can't and shouldn't be policing the whole world. But Iraqis did the usual thing for a 3rd world army: they ran away.
Thinking of that, why shouldn't they run away? I don't know how they were educated and trained; but usually a soldier is willing to fight an enemy who is going to conquer your country and kill your family. In this case it's a war not against the entire people of Iraq, but against the government of Iraq - and that government is not particularly loved by the people; it's tolerated, but as we see its employees (the soldiers) aren't willing to lift a finger to protect those faraway politicians. What we are seeing here was seen many times before, all over the world. A common man has no dog in this fight, and it is always better to allow the bosses and their condottieri to fight it out amongst themselves. This is why Iraq's army is not fighting - because it's not their war. The people of Iraq are in no danger. Whoever wins, Shiites or Sunni, Iraq will be still there, and the businesses will open as usual.
All flights apparently stopped at Baghdad International Airport after rocket attack- staff have fled.
Don’t blame them.
