“Je me souviens/Que né sous le lys/Je croîs sous la rose.”

In English it is “I remember/That born under the lily/I grow under the rose”.

The lily and the rose were referring to the floral emblems of the kingdoms of France and England, so it means that while Quebecers were born French, they prospered as citizens of the British empire.

And the Quebecois have been so very grateful ever since.

It doesn’t mean that, or they wouldn’t moan so much today, and think that the entire country owes them. It means I remember. Although they don’t remember squat apparently, because they surrendered unconditionally on the plains of Abraham. They were allowed to stay and keep their customs, but had to live under British law, apparently that wasn’t good enough. France didn’t want them back, the English did them a huge favour. Fast forward to today, and we’re still paying for that mistake.

If this story is true about this cop and what he did, I’d say throw him in jail for a least a 10 year stint to cool off.
