You know, that may not be such a bad idea, all things considered.

No one has ever said the Ottoman Empire was perfect - well, OK, maybe a few diehard Ottomans - but they sure kept that rather rambunctious part of the world pretty mellow when they were running the show. Sure, there was the occasional insurrection.....but that was put down in short order.

If I were faced with a Hobson’s Choice regarding the Islamic world - either wackos like the Saudis running the board, or the Ottomans - I’d pick the Ottomans without batting an eye. They weren’t perfect. But they were a damned sight better than what we’re seeing now.

Nothing is perfect.

There are, as they say, horses for courses. Johnny Turk had a very good understanding of the psychology and the bravado/cowardice formula of his Arab subjects.

Instead of a multi-trillion dollar waste in Mesopotamia with 40 000 invaluable young men dead or maimed, the Sultan would have taken a few heads, with a few more sets of testicles plus several thousand attractive women and had no worries for 75-100 years. Rinse and repeat.
