The UK wasn’t created until over four hundred years after William Wallace’s death.
Nonsense. The United Kingdom wasn't a conquest or an occupation: it was a voluntary union of two independent nations, in which Scotland was technically the senior partner (in that a Scottish monarch inherited the English throne, not the other way round).
In recent times United Kingdom politics has often been dominated by Scottish politicians, who have exerted an influence beyond what you would expect from the size of the respective populations. The last three British prime ministers have been Scottish, or of Scottish upbringing or origin, as have many senior cabinet ministers.
>>>voluntary union of two independent nations
Uh, I have always been taught that some clan lords were bribed off with land and the rest slaughtered at Colloden. Sort of an ethnic/cultural cleansing ala Ireland and Cromwell. Help me understand if was misinformed about how it came together. I know my ancestors were “cleared” and forced to Canada, those that survived.
they hate the English... Before the union, Scotland was always tied to France
The English did invade from the Norman times until the Tudors
Yes, 1707 was a voluntary union, but in actually it was a "buy-out"
Culloden wasn't simply English slaughtering Scots: there were as many Scots fighting for the Hanoverian side as for the Jacobite side. Again, Scottish landlords were responsible for many of the worst excesses of the clearances. I'm pinging the scotsman, who has often posted on this subject, as he can give you a much more authoritative explanation than me!
The Jacobite uprising wasn’t about Scottish nationalism, it was about putting the deposed Stuart Dynasty (of both England and Scotland) back on the throne. There were English Jacobites as well.
Scotland benefits from being part of the UK because it can borrow money at favourable rates. If Scotland becomes independent, it will probably be rated something like BBB and be forced to borrow money at usurious rates of interest that will cripple the economy, especially given that the YesNP is committed to sky-high public spending on all these socialist goodies that they’ve promised the Scottish people, unfunded by revenue from the shipbuilding/defence and financial industries that have said they will flee accross the border to England to shelter under the proven currency and economy of England.
Oh, and the SNP’s assumption that they will get a currency union or simply adopt the pound without a lender of last resort is pure genius (not), and will terrify most investors who fear an almost inevitable Scottish default. In any case, how can anyone possibly be right-wing and in favour of Scottish Independence? It will basically entrench socialism in Scotland and its usual ruination of the economy and statist social policies.
