Garands use en block clips that stay in the magazine until the cartridges have been expended. Stripper clips, as used in Mausers and copycats, are removed after the cartridges have been forced into the magazine. Detachable box magazines, on an AR for example, can also be loaded from stripper clips.

Does the ‘03 Springfield use a stripper clip? If so, that’s what I was confusing with the M1. Obviously, rifles are not my area of expertise when it comes to firearms.
