Gonzaga University anthropologist David B. Givens says the widely disseminated video, which shows a wan-looking Bergdahl being marched by his captors to three Special Forces soldiers and an Army helicopter, reveals a prisoner reluctant to part from his captors.
“Based purely on the nonverbal cues captured in this Taliban video, the American and his Afghan handler behaved in a manner that would be consistent with a sad farewell or a grieving goodbye,” Givens, director of the Center for Nonverbal Studies in Spokane, Wash., told The Daily Beast.“They shared friendly, direct eye contact in the manner of allies rather than enemies.”

“Based on his depressed lip corners, puckered brows, and tearing eyes, along with the forward bowing motions of his head, the American appeared to be softly crying,” Givens continued in an email. “The Afghan man seemed to console the American with friendly, palm-up (supinated) hand gestures, and then gently patted the American several times, reassuringly, on the shoulder, as if to wish him well.”

I appreciate you making the point on the seriousness of desertion. Yes, I did not characterize what appear to be his actions properly. However, while I can see from all I have read that he probably did desert, I just am not convinced that he is also a traitor. For instance, in this news article from a reporter in Pakistan, his seemingly agreeable behavior is revealed to be a way of gaining opportunity to escape.

It’s been a loooong time since I’ve heard that one.
He was “chubby” to put it lightly.
I do not believe that headstrong and independent are qualities unique to home schooled individuals, and moreover, that those qualities would be rare in the armed service. The picture painted of him is rather one of someone idealistic and quixotic. It’s irrelevant really to the desertion issue because anyone with a lick of sense could comprehend the seriousness of his actions. Apart from protecting the president liberals also do not prize the military, fairly certain rolling stone does not. Frankly I am incapable of taking anything OTHER than the conservative viewpoint. His parents Christian credentials are rather open to question at this point.
