“Ascribe”? I know this is the smartest woman in the world but how does that verb fit the context of the sentence?

Absolutely not. The appropriate word here is "subscribe".

For a mere mortal, the press would put "(sic)" after the error. Now both Hillary and the press are seen to be illiterate. I guess her Wellesley degree has passed its sell-by date.

I noticed that also. “Ascribe” (I think) means “give credit to”. She mean to say subscribe, but that didn’t sound smart enough, I guess.
