ok, that is fascinating, I did NOT know that Stein was not a democrat or socialist!
So I guess there are now “several” things that I like about, ahem, her.
Actually I guess I’m only down to one thing that I do not like about her and that is her “marriage”....other than that, a cool lady.
Personally, I’m a Matisse man.
And yes, many others picked up his banner later, and maybe they would have regardless. But she and Leo were some of the first, and for that, we must be grateful.
Thanks for that extra info. Very interesting!!!
The only trouble with Stein is that she continued to like Petain after the Occupation. She could not get over her love of him because of his stature during the First World War. She and Alice drove an ambulance during the war - saving the lives of many soldiers. She wanted to write speeches for Petain during WWII and was, thankfully, talked out of it by friends.
After WWII, she invited American soldiers to her Paris home. She threw open the doors to hundreds of them, forcing Alice to work overtime in the kitchen to feed them.
Alice, also, was a militant conservative. She outlived Stein by many years and, sadly, annoyed her liberal friends with her views...
