Interestingly, the father is an apostate Christian, who belonged to the very conservative Orthodox Presbyterian Church while his son was growing up. What happened to make the father and (apparently) the son reject their Christian faith and the native land is not known. There is historical precedent for this: Lee Harvey Oswald and various Communist spies who worked for the cause of world revolution, e.g., the Rosenbergs. What happened is not the sort of prisoner exchange the Israelis do, but an exchange of a deserter for five terrorists.

Bowe Bergdahl should be court-martialed and if convicted, given the same treatment Eddie Slovik did. Slovik was merely a coward; Bergdahl appears to be a turncoat.

The tweets I find puzzling, unless he got hacked or they’re phony, but I’ve seen no claim about that.

The local language I find more understandable. If I’d learned that my only son a POW was speaking only Pashto or whatever you call it, I’d be inclined to learn it, too. That makes sense to me, as I’d be doing everything I could to be closer to my captive son.
