Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has issued a rare public statement hailing the exchange of five Guantanamo Bay detainees for a Taliban-held US soldier as a "big victory".
Sgt Bowe Bergdahl, 28, was handed to US forces in Afghanistan on Saturday.
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has defended the exchange amid criticism Congress was not given 30 days' notice before the detainees were released.
He said the US had to act quickly to save the soldier's life.
Sgt Bergdahl, who is said to be in good condition and has been flown to Germany for more treatment, was the only US soldier being held by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire Afghan Muslim nation," said Mullah Omar, who has made no public appearances or speeches since fleeing Afghanistan in 2001 when US-led forces toppled the Taliban after the 9/11 attacks in the US.

What’s his muslim name?
Again, the U.S. Is made to look weak. All according the President Jarretts plan.
Oops, you’re correct!
Imam alKerry?
Damnit, I wish there was a real Mitch Rapp who could get into the WH and end this terrible nightmare.
And they even promised him he’d be on the real waiting list, not the fake one...
Word from the DOD ranks is that the Dirka-Dirkas will soon be enjoying a serving of Obama’s favorite dessert: drone strikes. We had eyes-on during the exchange and still do. This was supposedly an op to follow the rats to their hiding places.
Don’t know if it’s true - we shall see - but it comes from someone with access to strategy discussions. Obama does love to use his drones.
I don’t believe it.
See #48.
This episode puts an exclamation point at the end of the abject failure of the Obama administration’s foreign policy and the administration in general. This feels like it did at the end of the Carter administration and the “Desert One” debacle.
It’s difficult to believe Obama would come up with it anyway. If it is true, the plan probably came from military leaders. That I could believe and support. Lie to ‘em. Then hit ‘em where they live. Peace out, Mohammed. Enjoy your virgins.
What a load of horseshit... on so many levels.
I’ve never seen an organization so easily make the argument: “It was inconvenient for us to follow the law, so we didn’t ... “ and have it accepted by the rest of the country, than the Obamanites.
You see the same thing in their attitude towards `undocumented immigrants’: “We don’t like the law, so we’re ignoring it.”
Probably. I’m just passing it on. I made note of it and will be following up on it to see if it pans out.
When the five terrorists re-surface and return to slaughtering Americans, Obama can manufacture another fantasy about videos or some other equally ridiculous cover-up, and the media will dutifully back him up. There’s absolutely no down side for him when he’s caught lying, and he doesn’t even try to dress up his falsehoods.
This whole thing seems like a collusive setup; from the way he walked away from his post, leaving his gun and kit, his emails saying he was ashamed to be an American, the report that he was training the Taliban in ambush techniques and bomb making, his father giving thanks in Arabic, and the exchange of five high ranking Taliban from Gitmo for this probable deserter. This seems like a deal cooked up between Obama and his advisors and the terrorist leadership.
BINGO
Lame duck Obama doesn’t even try to make an appearance of competence.
Brings to mind the high-level Soviet guy who, when asked about Russia not being directly involved in Middle East talks, said they didn’t need a representative, Kissinger was their man.
It WAS a victory for terrorists. He has every right to celebrate...
My question is, ‘When has Obama ever delivered a ‘victory’ for the United States?’ Will that ever happen? And why did Obama care so much more about this man than about the dead SEALS of Benghazi?
