TE, I’m sorry you, and your mom are dealing with this horrible disease/condition. Both me parents (83 YO) are borderline at this time. For now, I have a good relationship with them. I know that the day will come when they become argumentative/combative. They know that too, and have asked me to “help” them when necessary. I will.

You may be referring to an MMSE (Mini Mental State Exam) used by professionals. I found one at http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/pharmacare/adti/clinician/pdf/ADTI%20SMMSE-GDS%20Reference%20Card.pdf

There are days I wonder if I could pass it. :)

I sat next to my Mom when she took the test and when it was over I joked that I would have missed some of those answers. The doctor told me that it wasn't a matter of getting the answers right it was how you responded in terms of how long it took to reply and other subtle clues.

I am sorry that both of your parents may have it. It isn't easy to deal with at all. I think combativeness is an early symptom and goes away as other problems arise. That was how it went with my Mom. Personality may be a factor in how argumentative/combative a person with dementia is too. Thankfully Mom is as sweet as can be (always has been) and she is too frail to be a physical problem for me.

I wish you the best in helping them. It may well be the biggest challenge you have ever undertaken.
