Antarctic ice began melting earlier that thought: Study [5,000 years ago]
Times of India ^ | 5/29/14

Coming on the heels of recent studies that suggest destabilization of part of the West Antarctic ice sheet has begun, a study shows that the Antarctic ice sheet began melting about 5,000 years earlier than previously thought - at the end of last ice age.

Before SUV's and incandescent light bulbs, there was....melting ice.

In your face, Al Gore.

Um, isn't that what "end of ice age" means?

There is consensus within the government funded scientific community that the ice cap melting began with the advent of the SUV.

Summary of the article:

The melting of the Antarctic Ice Sheet
was thought to have started 14,000 years ago.

...researchers examined two sediment cores
from the Scotia Sea between Antarctica and South America
that contained “iceberg-rafted debris”.

...Periods of rapid increases in iceberg-rafted debris
suggest that more icebergs were being released
by the Antarctic ice sheet.

...researchers discovered increased amounts of debris
during eight separate episodes beginning as early as
20,000 years ago, and continuing until 9,000 years ago.

...research also provides the first solid evidence
that the Antarctic ice sheet contributed to what is known as
meltwater pulse 1A - a period of very rapid sea level rise
that began some 14,500 years ago.
...During that time, the sea level on a global basis
rose about 50 feet in just 350 years.

...9,000 years ago, the episodic pulses of melting stopped.
...Perhaps the sheet ran out of ice.

Not to a "Climate Professional" it doesn't. You see, when you are receiving "climate science" grant money, you tend to see the world in a different way than the average working stiff sees it. And things like "ice ages" -- and other things that don't help the AGW political cause -- must be actively ignored.

That can't be right. I think its evidence that aliens did live on Earth 5,000 years ago and drove around in SUVs and had incandescent light bulbs. Its also evidence that the Republican Party is a lot older than we thought. Because those are the things that cause global warming and the melting of the ice sheets.

The agenda of the environmentalists is to BLAME MAN (or Bush) for the melting of the ice and for global climate change. (once called global cooling, then global warming, then global cooling, then global warming...and now plain ole global climate change). What they refuse to admit is that the SUN goes through cycles and has for billions of years. We are now into a Solar Maunder Minimum.(cooling)

I am a bit curious how a location with the average mean temperature of -70 degrees F and had the lowest recorded temp of -129 degrees F, can melt? The South Pole’s highest temp was -9 and only on the peninsula has it ever reached above freezing at +59 and that was just once.

Sublimation? :>} Not really “melting”. Still, why isn’t anybody addressing the disappearance of the Yosemite Valley area glaciers? What a travesty. Of course when the situation turns around and we have advancing glaciers, THEN someone might be a little concerned.

Sublimation?

Maybe, but I would buy that for a dollar only if the vapor did not flash freeze the instant it became a gas.

It might, but if a howling wind is blowing it out to sea...

Agreed...I'll take: Geothermal activity under the ice for a hundred dollars Alec.

Kind of like what measures do they take to determine that a

particular ice age (Ice, as in cold, frozen water) has

in fact ended, and the earth then moves into....wait for

it... a warming period.

On a serious note: what about plate activity? The Antarctic plate moves east against the South American plate. This activity creates earthquakes as well as volcanic activity. Could this be at least partially responsible for icebergs and ice melt?

Last time I checked... Of course to most liberals Canada and the northern third of the US should still be under 2 miles of ice.
