my daughter-in-law is taking a sociology course taught by a liberal feminist who also has a reputation for being very communist and was forewarned by fellow students that it may be difficult.

This is not an exact parallel but similar. During my college days I took a required Poly Sci course during which the Prof would invariably get on the subject of guns in America (he opposed). The course had little to do with the issue but he somehow worked it into each lecture. He would be talking normally when his voice would rise and grow tense, his glasses would come off, and he would harangue about the subject of guns. After his spiel he would calm down and the lecture would continue. It was very interesting to observe, but nonetheless I dropped the class and took it later with someone else.

Incidentally, this I like: “We are not talking about all white people, or you white people in general,” she told them. “We are talking about whiteness as a system of oppression.” It says absolutely nothing yet covers a multitude of matters. No matter what happens "the whiteness [of the]system" can be blamed.

Nothing new under the sun, there.

I took public speaking (engineering requirement) from a prof who "disliked engineers, and white male engineers especially" (her words, to the class, first day of attendance).

It was particularly frustrating to do "A" work (I like public speaking) and get lousy grades, while others in the class would sleep through the semester and get 'A's". I got my "C" that was required and got out. I suppose it was a good lesson in power, and in the worthlessness of some people who enjoy abusing it.

Now that I'm graduated, and doing OK, I've wanted to go back and see her. Find out if she's still a miserable #@$@$, going nowhere and accomplishing nothing, and teaching a class that no one wants to attend. :-) Success is the sweetest revenge.
