I think truck drivers are pretty safe. They do a heck of a lot more than just steer the truck to the destination. There is a great deal of "on-rig" maintenance that has to go on to keep the complexity that is a "big rig" rolling.

Where "driverless" will help will be to let the driver "catch forty winks" on long inter-urban stretches so they will be fully alert and capable when the inevitable "needs a human" things happen.

That actually makes things so much better; the drivers can end up resting and keeping an eye on the maintenance and paperwork and handle unloading and loading.
