May 22, 2014, 09:39 am 50 senators call for Redskins name change
By Mario Trujillo
Fifty Democratic senators are pushing the NFL to change the name of the Washington Redskins.
In a letter sent Thursday to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday, the group urged him to follow the lead of the NBA in punishing Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for making racially insensitive remarks.
"The despicable comments made by Mr. Sterling have opened up a national conversation about race relations," said the letter spearheaded by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). "We believe this conversation is an opportunity for the NFL to take action to remove the racial slur from the name of one of its marquee franchises."
Reid and other Democratic leaders have long called for a name change, but the letter signals the largest collective call in Congress.
The senators pointed to a number of federal laws that protect Native Americans. And they lamented the "racial slur" that Native Americans are made to watch on Sundays.
"Every Sunday during football season, the Washington, D.C. football team mocks their culture," the senators said.
"The NFL can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur. We urge the NFL to formally support and push for a name change for the Washington football team," they added.
Only five Democratic senators did not sign the letter, including both Virginia senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), a centrist lawmaker who is locked in a tough reelection fight, also did not sign the letter, along with Sens. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).

“Every Sunday during football season, the Washington, D.C. football team mocks their culture,”
Meanwhile the politicians in Washington D.C. mock our culture.
Nothing better else to do?
No scandals to look into, nothing?
I guess everything is OK in the USA.
John McCain and Rand Paul will soon be on that list, if not already.
No wonder vets are dying in VA hospitals when this is a priority of the Democrat majority!
But, of course, they are libtards. They don't want the responsibilities of ownership. They just want to order other people around.
The country is in a shambles and the so called “Senators” are worried about the Washington Redskins. Throw the “openly gay” bums out!!! They’re all worthless as hell!
How about FU
Czars are named after the totalitarian dictator Caesar. Obama has dozens of them. More than a name change, how about he gets rid of them altogether and then let’s talk about the name of a sports team.
Daniel Snyder needs to tell those 50 to pound sand. They have been the Redskins sine about the fourth or fifth year of existence. Leave the name alone. If those 50 don’t like the name Redskin, maybe they need to get out of D.C.. Permanently.
Can I make an observation?
We send congressmen and senators to Washington, DC, to perform the public’s business.
This seems like an issue which is NOT a legitimate function of our public officials. They should not be dealing with this on company time.
I really think that Dan Snyder knows how to run his team. And that includes whatever nickname he has for his team.
Due to political correctness, we are now making a federal case out of sports team nicknames???? Really????
I’ve heard talk that the Redskins may eventually want to build a new stadium, and that this stadium could be within the District of Columbia. If there are ever negotiations in that direction, look for them to be compelled to change their name, in exchange for them moving into the District.
As if anyone respects a senator.
Is “senator” not Latin for “slimy POS”?

I’m more offended by the name “Washington.”
If I were the Redskins owners I would offer to build the stadium on indian land with the stipulation that the name be kept as is.
The team ought to thumb their noses and change the name to the “Injuns.”
How about the “Creepy A$$ Crackers”?
My offer to change the name to “Red’sKins” holds. Put a photo of someone named Red and his kinfolk.
