Cochran missing in Mississippi as McDaniel struggles to stay on track

HERNANDO, Miss. — Just more than two weeks out from the Mississippi Senate GOP primary, Sen. Thad Cochran is nowhere to be seen. But his primary challenger, state Sen. Chris McDaniel, is grappling with a controversy that threatens to topple his upstart campaign.

Despite strong support from a number of national conservative groups and a favorable political climate, McDaniel’s gaffe-prone and hapless campaign may be his undoing.

That liability was on full display this weekend as he struggled to stifle growing controversy surrounding a lurid and potentially illegal video an apparent supporter took of Cochran’s infirm wife. And despite having the full muscle of both former Gov. Haley Barbour and current Gov. Phil Bryant’s political operations behind him in the race, Cochran faces a general apathy among supporters and vehement dislike among detractors. And he has done little himself to excite the former or soothe the latter.

Indeed, he spent this past weekend off the campaign trail, stopping back home on Friday, canceling public events on Saturday and jetting back to Washington on Sunday. Meanwhile, McDaniel zigzagged the state at craft fairs, church services and barbecues.

Cochran reportedly makes stops primarily for official business or other largely unannounced events. Though his campaign spokesman told a reporter he had a full slate of events planned for Saturday, the spokesman would disclose only one publicly, and Cochran canceled that appearance after the arrest of the blogger accused of taping his wife. Cochran’s campaign declined to make him available for an interview, and attempts to find him in the Capitol during votes were unsuccessful.

Multiple polls released this week from groups supporting McDaniel showed it to be a tight race, with one showing McDaniel up by 4 points.

Does anyone believe this was really done by a McDaniel supporter?

And if so, so what?

I would like to know more about this “apparent supporter” who is at the center of the mess.

How do we know who this person supports?

“Does anyone believe this was really done by a McDaniel supporter?”

I doubt it. These people (Barbour & his minions) know exactly when to put an oar in the water.

McDaniel was leading Cochran then BOOM! McDaniel scandal.

Thad’s probably hiding out in the basement apartment he “rents” from his highly paid female assistant and travel companion.

What B.S. The maliciously sophisticated political operation of Haley Barbour WROTE THIS COPY and got his friends in the D.C.(thehill!) media to push it.

This story has NOTHING to do with this race. If your candidate is so bad you have hide him for two weeks before the vote, your strategy is apparent to all thinking people.

LOL I’m sure he’s actually alive. But in personal appearances with their minor “back and forth” perhaps it would be apparent that his mental faculties are significantly reduced from what they were.

My feeling is that Cochran is simply a puppet of the DC establishment and Haley Barbour’s corruption machine.

I came to that conclusion when it was put out that he wanted to retire and then ‘presto’ he’s running again and the Barbour’s are coordinating everything. It’s not like they have anything to lose...or anything...if Cochran’s not in DC anymore:

http://mississippiconservativedaily.com/2014/03/30/plunkett-cochran-enables-barbour-to-skim-federal-money-for-family-and-clients/

“Cochran fought hard to be sure no-bid contracts were part of the Katrina relief package and that Barbour held the reins of the spending, so Barbour and his cronies could make out like bandits.

It was Cochran’s long-time engineering cronies who received the large fees associated with readjusting population numbers for water and sewer projects. It was Barbour’s niece who bilked the federal government out of money for portable toilets and portable showers, that in turn brought an FBI investigation and fraud convictions. And it was Henry Barbour, despite having no experience in disaster relief, that was named as head of then Gov. Barbour’s Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal.”

So, let's see here: When some loosely-connected, nutjob blogger does something admittedly sickening, this is supposed to be an indictment of the candidate himself, and in fact, of the entire Tea Party...

But when it turns out that one of the GOP-e and Brad Dayspring's favorite Senators, Lamar Alexander, had a pedophile working for him as his Chief of Staff, everybody is supposed to forgive and forget. There are no questions to be asked whether Lamar and the NRSC knew about any of this before the arrest, and if not, why not. There are no questions about why Lamar and his bunch did such a poor job of vetting this sicko...

Show us some proof of guilt of the candidate himself, GOP-e. If not, get lost. Your games are lame.

Yup, that’s about the size of it. Because Lamar is to be protected and McDaniel is to be destroyed. And everybody gets on board.

Haley Barbour is the GOPe equivalent of Howard Dean.
