California Chrome takes Preakness, Triple Crown dream alive

6:22 ET: The dream of a Triple Crown is still alive, after California Chrome held off Ride on Curlin to take Saturday's Preakness Stakes in an unofficial time of 1:54.84.

After an excellent start, Chrome was content in third for the majority of the race until a late charge at the 3/4 mile saw him forge ahead.

"It's an awesome feeling to be able to have a horse like California Chrome, he's just amazing," jockey Victor Espinoza said after the race. Espinoza improved his record to 6-0 on Chrome after holding off Social Inclusion and Ride on Curlin down the back stretch.

Asked how he felt Chrome would handle the heightened stakes at Belmont and Espinoza laughed it off. "I hope OK. You never know until you run, but he seems like he's going to be alright."...

I wonder how many distance specialists have been held back for the Belmont this year? It’ll be a tough win for California Chrome.

I was just a kid when Secretariat won the triple crown. I watched all three races. Best race horse of all time hands down. It was a shame he died so young.

I’ll always remember that incredible race. Turcotte was astounded when he turned around. Without a doubt, Secretariat will always be the best in my book. Brings back great memories. Thanks for posting the pic.

What made that win soooooo AMAZING was that Secretariat was getting faster as the race went on.

When Secretariat started pulling away from Sham, Sham WASN'T slowing down. Secretariat was speeding up.

Wrong race. It was in the KDerby that he ran each successive quarter mile faster than the previous one.

In the Belmont Stakes his final furlong was his slowest. It’s just that the other horses were slowing more dramatically than he was so he was still widening his lead right to the wire.

He was gelded, too, wasn't he?

Sham picked the wrong year to be born.

He was. Apparently done due to the behavior that got him his name. Stomping metal feeding appliances.

Reading his bio, that sounded like a really smart horse. Bad temperament (willfulness?) plus an undistinguished pedigree led them to snip him. Too bad.

Interesting to read about him in retirement.

Any other year a horse like Sham would have been known as a great horse. He would have won at least 2 of the 3 for the Triple Crown. Instead, he becomes just an also ran.

Secretariat was a freight train in a horses body.

that sounded like a really smart horse.

I saw his last race live at Santa Anita. Although interfered with down the complete home stretch from the rail almost to the outside, he still prevailed. He didn't like to lose.
