Mary was my sister, the lady who introduced me to the sailing lifestyle in the Caribbean in the early 1970s. She was very adventurous, for example, becoming an accomplished SCUBA diver in her twenties during the 1960s, when very few women took up the new and “macho” sport.

We all loved her dearly, but are happy to know that she is in a better place now. I was fortunate to have had the chance during her final wek to thank her for setting me upon my life-long course of ocean sailing.

Now I’m back in the islands at anchor, with a very shaky connection, but I felt the need to say something about her, and the deep impact she has had on my life from sailing aboard her 33-foot sloop Maica in 1973, until the present time.

REQUIEM

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,

My condolences to your family.

You were indeed blessed with her presence.

We all were.
