“We should put unnecessary us in words like labour and favour?”

I don’t get that either, and I’m stuck having to do it, because I get paid to write up here and my boss wants the extra u, so now I’m getting used to it. Irritating!
There does seem to be a fascination with extra letters—why ZED? I refuse to have ‘zed’ spoken in my house, so of course my family all teases me with it. Why have a word when one letter, ‘Z’, will do?
My kids (both born in the U.S. but pretty much Canadian having lived here since they were little) say, well there’s “double-u”; they claim that is a word like ‘zed.’
I’m not sure how to counter that. I just know it..I feel it.. that “zed” is wrong. It just is. ;)
But at least it’s Zed everywhere else in the world.
