Rise of Oceans Due to Melting Antarctic Ice Sheet Is 'Unstoppable'
Yahoo! News ^ | 5/12/14 | Danielle Wiener-Bronner - atlantic wire

Two forthcoming reports on the western Antarctic ice sheet confirm previous fears that the ice's melt will increase ocean levels by as much as 13 feet within the next few centuries. They also suggest that the process has already begun — and is likely not reversible.

The New York Times reports that both papers — one by NASA scientists, to be published in Geophysical Research Letters, and one by University of Washington scientists to appear in Science — find that the West Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of naturally-occurring warm water welling up from deep in the ocean.

None of this is surprising to those paying attention to the state of the West Antarctic, per the Times, which reports that the late Dr. John H. Mercer predicted the unstoppable melt back in 1978:

The basic problem is that much of the West Antarctic ice sheet sits below sea level in a kind of bowl-shaped depression [in] the earth. As Dr. Mercer outlined in 1978, once the part of the ice sheet sitting on the rim of the bowl melts and the ice retreats into deeper water, it becomes unstable and highly vulnerable to further melting.

Now, scientists are saying that the situation in the Antarctic has passed a crucial threshold. "There's no stabilizing mechanism," said Dr. Ian Joughin, lead author of the paper slated to appear in Science. Even if if the melt rate was too slow, it would be "too little, too late to stabilize the ice sheet," he adds. And NASA's Thomas P. Wagner said "this is really happening. There's nothing to stop it now."

Not true. When the ice melts in my soda it over flows... Right???

OH WAIT. I left my liberal hat on.

Was there any mention of the GIANT FREAKING ACTIVE VOLCANO FIELD underneath it? What caused that? Fracking?

the Antarctic ice sheet is bigger than ever, I have no idea what this nonsense is talking about.

Being something of a scientist myself,
I can straighten it out:

The way you know it's global warming is: it gets cooler. No-- Just wait; I'll explain:

Warming due to clouds of methane from cattle, which is supplemented similar emissions from the benighted people who eat those defenseless, gentle creatures, forms a gaseous tent which traps sunlight which warms the earth, which causes the polar ice caps to melt. This melting ice then cools the water, which chills the winds as they make their way to the blades of our windmills. These winds have to work extra hard to get through the windmill farms, they tucker out and slow down, but they're still chilled from all those ice cubes in the ocean--so chilled that by the time they finally warm up they've wandered off to somewhere else. Then people in the vicinity of the tuckered winds feel cold and decide that a nice pot of chili is just the thing, and the cycle begins again.

the land would RISE up from the sea level with all that mass removed.

Yes, the mechanism is called "isostatic rebound." It's happening right now in the Great Lakes region and other places around the world where former vast ice sheets have retreated due to natural "global warming." But it's a very slow process happening over thousands of years. It would be barely measurable in a normal human lifetime.

Not to worry...we heading for another Dalton Minimum because the Sun’s magnetic field is declining....so less sunspots are created....and the Earth COOLS.

NBC: Two teams of scientists say the long-feared collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet has begun, kicking off what they say will be a centuries-long, "unstoppable" process that could raise sea levels by as much as 15 feet. here

This article: Two forthcoming reports on the western Antarctic ice sheet confirm previous fears that the ice's melt will increase ocean levels by as much as 13 feet within the next few centuries. They also suggest that the process has already begun — and is likely not reversible.

Someone exaggerating? or is everyone exaggerating? :)

This is about the f’n millionth time some commie rat leftist has told me something is going to kill me. The real evidence shows that they are either stupid or they are congenital liars. I choose the latter.

Delingpole debunks the Himalayan scare; he’ll get around to the Antarctic scare soon, I’m sure.

let’s assume it all “melts”

the incredulous theory attempts to suggest the rise in sea level will be directly proportional to the amount of water locked up as ice

so none will evaporate and become water molecules in the atmosphere??

and even then none of those water molecules will fall as rain that ends up in land locked lakes??

none of the rain that originates from evaporation of the melting ice will raise the ground water level, or raise the water level in any wells or underground reservoirs or aquifers?? anyhere???

it all will remain “in the ocean”???

I think those that think a melting glacier can only contribute to a sea level rise do not understand ANY “environmental science” about water.

The melt ice below sea level can't contribute, since it will fill the depression it already occupies.

Problem is the ice above sea level.

What, me worry? Sa la vie. What ever happens, we have no control at all and never will. Thinking we do is crazy and a waste of time and resources.
