Poll: Mitch McConnell leads Matt Bevin by 32 in Kentucky GOP primary

That’s among likely voters too, although when you’re looking at a lead this big, it doesn’t much matter which slice of adults you’re using.

I thought next Tuesday’s primary night open thread would be rip-roaring food-fight fun between “true conservatives” and RINOs. Instead, we’re destined for a snoozer. Note the tea-party numbers, in particular. Bevin never got traction even among his ostensible core constituency.

And Mitch will lose the seat in the general. Thanks Kentucky voters. Thanks a lot. Also, Breitbart smeared Bevin (Michael Patrick Laehy).

It is no coincidence that when big time politicians like Mitch and Boehner, John Cornyn, Lindsey Graham etc. etc. run in the primary, there are multiple candidates running against them.

The political machine sets it up that way....

Mitch may still lose to the Democrat in the general.

Well... in search of silver linings... the one is Alison Grimes is a WHOLE lot easier on the eyes!

Now or later, Bevin did himself in with the cock fight crap. We shouldn't blame voters for wanting a candidate with half a chance to win.

This is why McConnell and Boehner are so safe, they're party leaders

McConnell isn't safe by a long shot. He very well could lose the general election.

... am I the only person who really doesn’t get the whole cock-fighting controversy? I don’t think its a great practice, but compared to Mitch setting up amnesty, stabbing Cruz in the back, etc., it’s nothing. It wasn’t like he attended a KKK rally. Bevin was 100X better than Mitch.

His ads have been terrible from the beginning - he is the ads himself attacking McConnell directly rather than using a narrator - that’s not a good idea - all of the blowback from “attacking” comes back on a candidate personally that does that.

The cockfighting rally incident which he elevated into a major scandal by denying he knew where he was when he was speaking and continued to do so even after video surfaced destroyed any chance he may have had at getting any traction in this race. I never expected him to win, but hoped he might be a candidate for future viability in another race - but after that, not so much.

I wonder if he's running the campaign the way he wants to run it or taking advice from consultants. People in his position tend to think, erroneously, that they're omni-competent.

Meant in the primary.

Still think McConnell is safe in the general election as well. People were writing him out in 2008 against Lunsford, saying it was going to be close, but McConnell won by a comfortable six-point margin, despite 2008 having been a big democratic year with Obama. If he won just fine then, can't imagine how he will be in danger in what should be a GOP year. The polls now are simply too early, and some even still have McConnell ahead, get back to me in late September with what they're showing.

I am across the river in Cincy but get all the Northern KY ads and McConnell had Bevin hammered in radio ads MONTHS ago, long before any Bevin ad appears and when it did, it was a defensive ad. By then, Bevin was already framed.

This whole cockfighting thing is ridiculous but its all I hear since the story/ad came out. I hear it on radio, I see it on Facebook. I don’t really watch TV but I imagine the story is there too.

Just another bad candidate....

In that poll though I really have to question the 56% or whatever the exact number was, of the Tea Party supporters favorability. huh?

They voted for newbies the last two elections and it has not turned out well.

Yeah, Karl Effing Rove and the Boys went out and shredded Tea Party people's backs with their Harvard letter-openers, and then gloated publicly when a challenger lost -- even to a Rat.

Yeah, you could call that "not [turning] out well".

Schooling the Main Street voters: "Cross us, and we will very personally stomp you, then we'll school you in public."

Yeah, I really want to see it your way now! </s>

Hell, Hugo Black and Robert Byrd were in the KKK, and it never materially hurt them.

Although there was a smarmy NYT piece the other day, talking about how Byrd had to apologize over and over for life ..... but the writer wasn't really talking (or lying) about Byrd, but making a point about Incorrect [as in, Tea Party] Political Speech, a la Sterling/Clippers and Paula Dean. And other victims of the Liberal Noyau (monkey screaming-chorus).
