Pigs & humans are not 98% the same genetically, by any measure.
But it's true that such numbers largely depend on exactly what & how you measure.
By carefully selecting your criteria, you might get pigs up into the 80+% range.

As for future genetic engineering, that is of course a whole another kettle of fish.

A google search turns up the following report on percent of identical DNA between humans and various others:

1. 99.9% the same amongst all humans = 3 million base pair differences out of 3 billion total.

2. 99.8% the same between modern humans and Neanderthals.

3. 94% the same between humans and chimpanzees.

4. 90% the same with cats.

5. 80% the same with cows & pigs.

6. 75% equivalents with mice.

7. 60% correspondence with chickens and, curiously, also with fruit flies.

Thanks for this link giving further information about the existance of the gene which seems to give some protection against AIDs, and may have survived due to also conferring resistance to the Black Death and/or Smallpox.
