Columbus Day renamed 'Indigenous Peoples Day' in Minneapolis

Christopher Columbus might have sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but he will no longer have a holiday in his name in Minneapolis. "The Minneapolis City Council voted to, as some would say, set the record straight.

Their unanimous vote renames Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day." A Minneapolis state representative says the new name is an effort to honor Native American culture.

"This would be a day to celebrate our survival as a culturally distinct people despite 500 years of disease, warfare, massacre, displacement and forced assimilation." This change got a lot of people fired up on social media, though.

One Facebook user wrote: "No, Minneapolis. It's still Columbus day and I will now celebrate it just out of spite."...

"Minneapolis is not the only city to make a move like this. Berkeley did it in the early '90s, and other cities have done it as well. Four states do not recognize Columbus Day, including South Dakota." Supporters hope Minnesota will join Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon and South Dakota in not recognizing Columbus Day.

I am okay with celebrating indigenous peoples. I have a few drops of indigenous blood myself. I am not okay with self-loathing Americans. Doing away with Columbus Day is just a slam against Americans of European descent and the planting of Western civilization here. I will own up to the troubles that caused for the natives here. I will not accept the implication that America is one big, long crime of the white man. Can we have an indigenous peoples day and a Columbus Day, or would that be too honest for leftist fascists?

That should be displaced by the Hopewell People Day.

That's why I posted the Lone Ranger Cartoon - it's nearly 50 years old, from Mad Magazine. Back then it was a joke, today, totally different meaning ...

I prefer to celebrate "Joyful Brutal Oppression and Happy Conquering Genocide of Native People" day.

It's my favorite holiday.

Ah yes! Those wonderful Indigenous peoples who lived in a paradise before the evil white man came.

I'd just like to give them back the country so we could re-conquer and re-oppress them all over again.

You think the LAST Trail of Tears was rough. Wait till you see what *I* got planned.

"This would be a day to celebrate our survival as a culturally distinct people despite 500 years of disease, warfare, massacre, displacement and forced assimilation.

That is the history of all peoples throughout the world.

I've never cared for parades, but I would be willing to fly to Minneapolis to attend a rousing Columbus Day Parade.

Who wants the government involved anyhow? Let the good patriots up there find a way to make this day a spectacular celebration.

Reconquer us from the self-loathers who have political power and that might do the trick right there.

I believe Newark was officially uninvited from the Union somewhere around 1934.

Yes! The hypocrites should give their homes, jobs, savings to Native Americans in atonement and return to whence their forefathers came. Except now they will be illegal immigrants to their ancestral country!

How how do you celebrate Indigenous People? What did they accomplish?

Indigenous people are overrated. That's what I hear when the locals in England complain about the influx of Africans, muslims, and Eastern Europeans who don't assimilate.
