The plot thickens. It’s marked “robust, moderate” with a 3/4 time signature and no key signature at all. That’s not because it’s in C Major, but because a key signature would just get in the way of what Messiaen is trying to do.
The angel (clarinet) who announces the end makes her appearance. This is another tough one to listen to, but the thematic material presented here makes its appearance later, along with the angel. There is an eerie beauty to the central section where the clarinet is silent and the piano plays quiet block chords.
