Well, I guess I grew up in far different times. Raised in my pre-school and early grade school years in lily white Westchester County, NY. This is circa early mid 1950’s.
I never even knew black people existed until my family moved to Culpepper, VA in 1961. Coming home from school on the first day a group of black kids asked if I wanted to play basketball. Indeed I joined in. Some concerned white folk called my grandmother to tell her and I was severely scolded and chastised when I got home.

Mine was mostly ‘White’ Orange and Dutchess County. Both places I am ‘recalling’ had a NYC reform school nearby where most of the locals worked.
I really ‘forgot’ I had a Black HS classmate until I saw him in a team baseball and basketball picture.
When going into boot camp in San Diego in 1956 I ‘befriended’ a Spanish kid from LA (maybe had 1 Black) and my Boot Instructors tried to ‘warn’ me of my choice of friends. I really had NO idea what they were talking about.
When we got ‘settled’ in HE was chosen as one of the ‘squad leaders’......
