Now that he’s gone, my mom just has an electronic gizmo that “barks” at people who come to the house.

Your comment triggered my memory of a story my folks told me.

My folks went to visit my Dad's aunt back in New York State. During the trip, they visited NYC. The cabbie they used to get from the airport to the hotel seemed to have a dog with him somewhere, as my folks continually heard growling and barking noises.

They figured out it was the cabbie, and asked him about it. Said it had kept him from getting robbed in the past, so he kept doing it.

So, even the possibility of a dog, works.
