U.S. should send troops to quell Ukraine crisis
washingtonpost.com ^ | April 15, 2014 | James Jeffrey

Despite much diplomatic effort, the situation in Ukraine worsens. A coordinated Russian campaign, including an invasion threat, special operations destabilization in eastern Ukraine patterned on the Crimea model, and warnings of gas cutoffs document ever more clearly Vladimir Putin’s aim to cripple the Ukrainian government and control much or even all of this strategically vital European country.

Much cleaner and easier...and most effective to send our own

ground-air equipment to Ukraine, covertly.

Then go on the offensive and give money to the Chechnyans to hit the Russian people throughout Russia.

That’s how you play with Putin...dirty and covertly. Meanwhile we ratchet up the economic sanctions to more serious levels.

I like where you are going with your thinking. If you read the article, I think you would find that the author is in agreement with you. He does not advocate sending troops acutally into the Ukraine, but as you said into Poland, Romania and the Baltics. I also like the idea of Finland and Sweeden into NATO. Most importantly, we need to step up oil and natural gas production and start exporting to Europe. Hopefully enough Euroweenies will ditch their environmental disdain for fracking and start looking at pulling out some of their own natural gas via fracking. Get off the Putin gas lifeline so they can grow a spine and stand up to him.

Russian pilots flew against the US during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. I don't recall WWIII starting over that.

Vietnam and Korea aren't on Russia's front door step like Ukraine. A war with Russia doesn't have to be a World war and it doesn't have to be nuclear but it could still be very devastating. Why should we have any war with Russia?

So, you're already in the Ukraine, in training, as a volunteer ? Good for you.

How about some live shots of the action from the viewpoint of a grunt volunteer?

We can't.

There is no way to get troops into the Ukraine without approval from Russia. Heck, if they want to we would have a heck of a time getting our guys OUT of Afghanistan.

If the US fedgov truly thinks this a good idea, they are mad.

"After all the grief these military dependents allies offered us over Afghanistan and Iraq, I'm inclined to agree. The problem is that if these countries are overrun by the Russians (or other empire builders), the successor empire may become unstoppable without the deaths of millions or tens of millions of Americans. Overall, it may be cheaper to stop the Russians at Ukraine."

Sorry, as a Cold War sailor of 11 years who was constantly chased by Soviet surface, subs, and aircraft, any empire builder will still have to deal with our Tridents! Yes, some Tridents have changed out some of their nukes for cruise missles. We still have enough nukes to blow up the world, contrary to popular belief (1 thousand and 5 hundred at least). No nation will ever try to conquer us for that reason alone, not to mention many nations (China&Russia) possess too much of our debt and would prefer not to take those losses.

So let the empire builders try. Besides us, there is England, France, Israel, India, etc. that will keep the idea of MAD going. Of course, there's always the rogue Muslim nations if they can get their hands on a nuke.

But here's a comforting though I learned some time back from a nuclear physicist: All fissionable materials have a nuclear signature from where they were created, whether enriched U-235 or plutonium. Ever wonder why we haven't been nuked yet, even with a dirty bomb? Because it can be traced back to origin.

Even if from some small muslim group, it will still be traced back to point enrichment and through the channels when they got their hands on it. The CIA sometimes misses the boat, but they have thousands tracking fissionable materials. I say thank you.

Plus, the so-called "suitcase nukes" supposedly on the "black market" are now worthless. They need too much constant maintenance. According to the nuclear physicist I talked to they are now non-operational, except for the core which could be used in a "dirty bomb". However, see above about traceable isotopes.

Why should we have any war with Russia?

Because the Russians are literally on the march - the centuries-old Russian will to global empire is re-asserting itself.

That is still no excuse to send American troops.

Where will the planes based out of? An aircraft carrier?

And if Russia starts sending planes in, do we start a war?

Really, under THIS CIC? I think not.

This idiot would send Troopers in tomorrow and tell Putin they are coming back yesterday.

Great. Be sure to post when you decide to sack-up and go to the front line in Ukraine to save the free world.

Ditto that!!!

While I’ve disagreed with you on the whole Ukrainian-Russian situation and what was going on there, I completely agree that we need to stay out of it! We have major problems in our own country with our economy, debt,
PC-itized military command, open borders, etc. We absolutely cannot afford to go into another part of the world to police it, no matter which side we believe is correct.

We would likely find out if the S-300 is as good as advertised. Possibly the S-400, as well.

Isn’t this the same WP editorial board that opposed US troops in Iraq ... calling it Bush’s War?
Back in 1956 Russian troops invaded Hungary, this was near the height of the Cold War era ... and the US, although there was a lot of sword rattling ... stayed the hell out of it. Same with the Ukraine ... let them sort it out we gain very little by being involved.
