For some historical perspective, let us remember that Dr. Martin Luther King sent children as young as six years old en masse into the face of Bull Connor’s water cannon and dogs at Birmingham in 1963.
One of those children involved was his niece, Alveda King.
Connor’s forces were diverted by the children while the adults were able to breach the police lines and reach protest areas downtown.
It was the turning point of the Civil Rights Movement.
It was controversial at the time with a lot of anger from white and black media, but it happened just the same.
