Recalling the riots in Kiev, I was amazed that for a time (initially) each side took some nasty casualties -it showed amazing restraint really. You can only assume the police were at least somewhat sympathetic to the cause.
Now...of coarse, there are always a few provocateurs (read sadists) on both sides and they will take the opportunity to victimize the unwitting target -if not the innocent target.
