ANTIOCH -- An Antioch jewelry store owner shot and killed an armed robber Friday afternoon and police said a customer was also shot during the heist, police said. The robbery at the Hardy Nix Jewelry store at 3600 Delta Fair Boulevard shut down a major street as authorities swarmed the surrounding area looking for a second suspect who escaped the store after the 4:27 p.m. robbery.
The female customer who was shot was taken to a hospital with a non-life threatening wound, according to Antioch police Lt. Robin Kelley. The woman "just happened to be in the way" as the robber traded fire with the store owner, according to Antioch police Lt. Don LaDue.
Responding officers found the armed robber who was shot by the store's owner on the ground outside the store's entrance. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The store, operated by husband and wife Mark and Leslie Perez, was opened in 1947 by Leslie Perez's father, according to its website. The store carries traditional jewelry as well as wedding items, collectibles and religious items. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Eric McManus at 925-779-6940.

Another welcome episode in the lives of criminals as they enter the status of attaining room temperature as a prelude to attaining ground temperature.
The store owner obviously practices good gun control.
Don’t rob and steal and stay alive. All other criminal morons exit stage left.
Bring out the dead! Bring out the dead!
This comment there is a typical Liberal reaction:
“The innocent customer who was unnecessarily wounded will sue the business owner and win for escalating a robbery into a shootout. While it is OK for robbers to die while committing a crime it is just not worth endangering customers lives for a few bucks.”
The typical liberal sees the store owner’s act of self-defense as “saving a few bucks”.
I lived in Antioch for about 15 years, ending in 2003. I could’ve walked there from my place.
A would-be robber shot dead by an Antioch jewelry store owner was identified Tuesday as 20-year-old David Michael Carter.
Wearing black ski masks and jackets, Carter and a second man confronted employees and customers at Hardy Nix Jewelers at 3600 Delta Fair Blvd. about 4:30 p.m. Friday, police said.
The bandits allegedly ordered everyone inside to get on the ground. But the store owner emerged from the back and opened fire, hitting Carter, who was later found dead outside the store, police said.
No pic yet.
