Were told that theres nothing to worry about when it comes to Common Core. If thats true, whats with the intimidation and the punishment for those who oppose it:
A 13-year-old student at Orange-Ulster BOCES believes she was suspended from school this week as a result of telling other students they didnt have to take the Common Core English test Tuesday.
The girl, eighth-grader Seirra Olivero, was suspended for two days for insubordination.
While she acknowledges the charge, she contends in a complaint filed with the district that she felt bullied by three administrators because she told other students they didnt have to take the test.
Her mother, Carin Beauchesne of Sparrowbush, said Thursday that she felt her daughter had done what students are told to do when theyre being bullied.
She walked away! She felt she was being treated like a criminal. Shes a 13-year-old girl. What would you do?
William Hecht, Orange-Ulster BOCESs superintendent, said the girls complaint, which was filed under the states Dignity for All Students Act, was being taken seriously.
He said it was against school policy to discipline students for opting out of the controversial test, and that Seirras suspension came as the result of her refusing to obey the administrators.
He declined any further comment on the matter.
In her complaint, Seirra says that on Tuesday morning, the day of the test, she told a student he didnt have to take the test if he didnt want to. A teacher told her to shut my mouth and keep walking.
Is it just me or is that something youd expect to hear from a prison guard?
But then, they dont call it the school to prison pipeline for nothing.
Hat Tip: Weasel Zippers
I cannot speak for all conservatives ... only for myself.
What I want is for “public education” to be completely abolished. The State should not be in the business of running educational establishments. Even if such activity were appropriate to the State (it isn’t), the State has demonstrated gross incompetence and criminal malfeasance. It should be fired.
No. The parents are the customers.
Something like the attitude the court system takes about people who tell jurors about their rights to apply "jury nullification" to unconstitutional laws.
The rules say students can opt out of the test. How is choosing that option blowing off the rules?
The kid isnt mentally developed to know what common core is doing to this country like an adult does. The parent is using their child as a political tool. Did you ever ask yourself why the parent decided to not keep the child home from the test vs. Sending the child to school placing her in the middleto make a point? Keep children to children activities and let the adults deal with the adult matters. I find the parents actions repulsive. The parent told the child to do this vs. staying home.
Here's the point: it wasn't a rule.
According to the Times Herald
"I replied and said, 'I did some research and it said they don't have to.'" The principal then asked if she'd researched "both sides" of the issue. It sounds like the students WERE NOT under an obligation to participate in the Common Core tests, the principal knew that, and was upset with the student for telling other students their rights. Additionally, I'd like to know what "other questions" were asked, if they had anything to do with finding out the political beliefs of the student or her family, and by what right the principal was interrogating the student AFTER the student demanded her parents be present for any further questioning. The girl said in her statement that she grew increasingly upset with the principal but when she asked to call her mother, the principal refused.
"Then she started to ask other questions and that's when she started to interrogate me and I felt like I was being treated like a criminal."
The girl stalked out of the office, slamming the door behind her. Walking quickly down a hall, she said she refused to stop when another administrator demanded that she do so "four or six times."
That administrator, she said, told her "I had no business telling the kids that they don't have to take the test and if I wanted to tell them I (could) out of school."
This IS NOT simply “a school test”!
This is a LIBERAL INDOCTRINATION PROGRAM, being imposed under the guise of “common core”.
Liberalism always markets their poison in candy wrappers!
I think you’re missing the entire picture here, this isn’t simply about a test.
I fully agree with you, the government should not be in the business of running schools and other educational institutions.
I teach my children to stand up against tyranny. If this kid had put a UN flag in his truck or a Che Guevara flag no one would have said a word. But since he put a flag promoting his cultural heritage and he is a white kid, he has no rights at all.
In case you hadn't noticed, there is a war going on against white males. People have to apologize for being white or even speaking English correctly. It is not this kids fault that he is the white descendant of Southern gentlemen.
There were no rules about flags in pickup trucks when this kid arrived with his one day. The rule was created to squelch his free speech and his alone. It was an unconstitutional attempt to silence his viewpoint and to further the schools anti-white multi cultural attack on America's traditional heritage.
90% of the people who died while fighting under the stars and bars did not own slaves. If that flag offends someone then tough. There is no right to go through life without being offended. Ther is, however a right to hold and express offensive viewpoints. That right hiwever must be exercised occasionally in order to maintain it. Use it or lose it.
We must stand up to tyranny or we will most certainly kneel before it.
These common core tests have a problem. First, many students aren’t taking them seriously. I know one teacher who told me of multiple/many students taking 15 minutes on what should have been a 1 to 2 hour math test. This teacher is a math teacher and says it’s impossible to have completed that test in that time. Another told me that the science test pretends to cover growth for the year but doesn’t cover what those students might have taken that year...spend the year in zoology and don’t get tested on zoology. So, what do the kids do? They blow it off.
Why can they blow it off?
Because they KNOW that it doesn’t matter. It isn’t the ACT or SAT. It isn’t a graduation requirement. It isn’t anything except another dumb test toward the end of the year.
It is primarily a tool used by the government to measure your school for deciding if the fed wants to take over your school. And those are the facts.
The school itself says that the students can skip the test. The student points that out, and is punished.
Common core, BTW, is injurious to knowledge and learning. It is almost lethal for math and science.
Something the feds have no constitutional authority to do.
The No Child Left Behind law ensures that all children will have an equal opportunity to fail. It should be called the ALL Children Left Behind law.
The only way to improve education is to let the parents have a strong influence on what subjects are taught and how they are taught. The further you get from community involvement the worse the result.
Public Schools have become the recruiting ground for the socialist democrat agenda. Kids leave high school completely unable to think for themselves. They rattle off global warming nonsense and have no clue about how the world operates. They have no historical perspective for their positions. They are, in effect, drones and they don't even know it.
Centralized control of education is what they had in Germany and what they have now in North Korea. The Government dictates to everyone in the country as to what is important to learn and the parents are helpless to prevent their children from being brainwashed by those who would rob them of their liberty.
You forgot to mention that they do know Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber.
And their birthdates, significant others, and latest videos.
Strong skills to take to a job interview....
And parents should not use their 13 year old children as political tools to push their beliefs.
My kids are younger and I educate them, if they stand up, they’ll do it on their own. I will stand with them though and back them if needed. I for one will not sit idly by and watch freedom die, you’re free to do so, just don’t get in my way.
I was born in the mid 70s but im old fashioned like my dad...i make the decision for my kids when it come to academic choices such as I will and will not do. Kids today have FAR too much freedom. They are not adults and in no way should be addressed or treated as such.
I was born in 75, and also old fashioned, I do agree with kids having too much freedom, they need boundaries and guidance. They need that from you and I, not the educators though.
Ha!! Same year nice! I agree exactly with what you said.
