What a crock, smart cars only benefit is parking.. Arguing fuel efficient is nonsense. They get under 40mpg highway. Their city mpg aren’t bad at 34 mpg but hardly mind blowing many other traditional compacts are close to that these days if not better and many vehicles meet or beat its highway mpg.

The trade off for this is effectively if you hit anything or are hit by anything at highway speeds you have zero chance of survival, there is not enough space for deceleration the car body may hold its integrity but your body will wind up crushed and your brain will smack into your skull and odds of survival are insanely low.

Don’t condone the vandalizing but can’t say it’s overly surprising we live in a culture full of idiots today.

From that I heard their safety is better than expected but it is extremely uncomfortable to me. Drove a 2004 Smart Roadster (larger wheelbase, closer to a conventional car)- it is like a hybrid of golf cart and motorcycle. Quite a fun to drive though, might be convenient in a crumped European streets but I wouldn’t like to take a long trip or use it as a daily ride. Acoustic comfort, smooth ride is not about this vehicle.

In '09, we were on a road trip from Kalifornia to Florida, when we stopped at a Texas hill country rest stop...there was a little Smart parked there with Florida plates.

I was guessing it was an RV's tow-behind, but then a gray haired woman exited the restrooms, hopped in and headed east on the Interstate.

We caught up to her a few miles down the road, just as a semi was passing her -- and that little thing did a bigtime prop blast wobble.
