We all saw sympathetic news stores about how these young people wanted to work, assimilate into American society and walked a mile or more one way for a minimum wage job.
Once this beachhead was established (and in Minnesota's case, encouraged, by the ELCA, my former denomination), the government played bait and switch and almost all future imports were of the Muslim variety.
It would have been far less disruptive both for their country and ours to support a separatist movement in the south with a functioning government where Muslims were the minority.
