Did they have you run through a rough mix with click track? I understand why it would drive you crazy, but the playing was pretty soulful.
It was a rough, but pretty good, mix including everything. Only the countdown clicks, no click track. I think I was fairly lucky, as I hadn’t played a note in that mixed tuning, low 3 in D, top3 in G. I was hired to play pedal steel, but I didn’t think that was right for the tune. They headed out for lunch, and I ran to a nearby music store and bought a riser nut and put it on Neil Zaza’s acoustic. I had just gotten it tuned when they came back and I did the “run through” track. That tuning works well for songs in the key of E, and that cycle a lot between an E chord and a D chord.

Brilliant. :^)
Did they keep the track due to time/budget constraints? Or did they just like what you were emoting with the voicings, feel, style? Or was it all of the above? I liked what you were expressing in the tune. Did the producer give you a lot of freedom on the track, or was he pretty specific?
They loved the track, and wouldn’t let me do it over. Time and budget weren’t concerns, as I did his whole CD.
I was a given total freedom of expression on all tracks. They seemed to like my playing. Tommy Sche’ was in Zaza’s first band, so we were all kinda friends. I’d already done several calls to the studio, Neon Cactus, and the engineer knew what I needed. Played a lot of pedal steel on the CD, and the engineer is good.
I had already recorded with Neil for a couple of his css. The pedal steel seems an odd choice for his melodic metal, but things worked quite nicely. We’re very close friends.

He’s a source to be respected.
If followers in his footsteps aren’t appearing, then he could view his mission before the Lord. Would he want to do more to try to encourage keeping the class in contemporary country? Would he be able to exercise leverage? He came from before the era of the porn minded pencil pushers, and once a force nothing was going to make him stop. He’s too valuable. Same for others in the classy mode.
On the other hand there’s also now the self publishing and self promotion angle, which was impractical a few decades ago. Obscure artists can now have a better chance to show merit.
