Tired of Mitch McConnell's Attacks, Matt Bevin Supporters Believe Upset Possible

With the Kentucky primary election six weeks away supporters of Republican Matt Bevin believe the tea party-backed challenger to Mitch McConnell still has a chance to pull off an upset.

McConnell leads Bevin by double-digits in every poll and has brutalized his challenger in attack ads, calling him a "con man" and "fraud" in campaign materials.

A Wenzel Strategies survey shows McConnell's negative attacks are working. The majority of voters have no opinion on Bevin, but his unfavorable rating is at 30 percent compared to 24 percent who view the Louisville businessman favorably.

But among the over 3,500 conservative activists and candidates who gathered in downtown Louisville this weekend as part of a FreedomWorks event, enthusiasm for Bevin remains solid. "I think a lot of people are disappointed with what’s happened in Washington and Sen. McConnell’s been there for the last 30 years," said Charlie Parson of Richmond, Ky. "When he was in leadership we had the White House and both branches of Congress for several years and we still racked up a huge debt. And he hasn’t done anything to help us as a nation to get things under control. I think we have to step out and choose someone like Matt Bevin." Many of the speakers, including radio personality Glenn Beck, praised Bevin while hammering McConnell's campaign style. The voters in attendance told WFPL they are also fed up with the negative attacks.

"I think it’s shameful what he’s doing," said Debbie Parsons, also from of Richmond. "If (McConnell) can’t run on his record after all this time in office, is that what he fights for, using dirt and mud and things that are just manufactured? It’s shameful that somebody of his caliber can’t do better than that."

Wishes, dreams and anecdotes don’t win elections.

I thought it was called Democrats voting in a GOP primary.

All I can say is this... The continual trashing of Matt Bevin by McConnell is backfiring, BIG TIME.

One of my neighbors, who was a staunch McConnell fan and voter just informed me that he was done with him. Why? The constant drumbeat of Fraud, Tax Cheat, etc. against Bevin caused this man and his wife to do their own research.

After listening for nearly a half and hour before I had to leave found me shaking my head in amazement, McConnell’s team has definitely “screwed the pooch” with that family.

I’m not familiar with the State’s election laws. Are they allowed to do that in Kentucky?

Yes, we in the GOP have our share of low-info voters.

Looks as though at least in Kentucky, the “average GOP voter” is dumber than a box of rocks.

So, the polls don’t make that much sense to me.

What are the polls are saying by saying that Bevin beats the Dem but McConnell doesn’t? They’re saying that a lot of KY folks do NOT want to vote for a Democrat but they just cannot stomach Mitch “The Bitch” any longer.
