The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is "pushing very hard" to release a proposed rule that would establish its authority over e-cigarettes, the head of the agency said on Thursday amid concerns the products pose a risk to children.
FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg told senators at a Congressional budget hearing that it has taken too long to move the rule forward and that she expects the proposal to be ready for release "very soon."

Socialist statist Stalinist nonsense!
It’s a drug delivery device. Common sense says it should be regulated in regards sales to minors.
“Let’s see what the rule is, before people go hollering nanny state.”
The FDA isn’t congress, and should have no authority to be issuing rules of any sort.
You’re a happy slave and you call me stupid? (From the safety of internet anonymity!)
BTW, I quit smoking 30 years ago and think e-cigs are stupid, but I’m not a nanny state booster like you. And I know you wouldn’t have the stones to call me stupid to my face, you mouthy coward.
Congress has already ruled. e-vapors are taken into the body, so whether you call it a drug or a food, or a tobacco product, the FDA has congressionally authorized jurisdiction.
I've got no problem with that in concept. Adults need to care more about their children than the state.
But it's clear some adults don't care and there is a compelling reason why regulation is being considered. Year after year, generation after generation, kids were being turned into addicts.
Here then is what Newt said about caring for kids in '97.
Civilization cannot survive with twelve-year-olds having babies, fifteen-year-olds shooting one another, seventeen-year-olds dying of AIDS, and eighteen-year-olds graduating with diplomas they cannot read.
I don’t think I actually called you stupid. I said the gun analogy was stupid and explained why.
And I strongly implied with my “If you insist” statement that if you smoke or vape you are stupid. But you were smart enough to quit and admit that you think e-cigs are stupid. So my statement doesn’t really apply to you, does it.
Beer bottles are drug delivery devices. But you’re the number one socialist Stalinist statist on this website so no surprise.
If you are satisfied with trusting someone else to tell you what is safe and healthy for you and yours, that is your choice, and I respect it-but please stop demandinhg that your choices be imposed on those of us who do not think the same way-have equal respect for those of us who prefer to make our own decisions about food and recreation.
If you don’t grow your own food, the fresh veggies at the grocery store are usually safe, if you just wash them-I eat them in the winter when it is too cold to grow stuff. There is no shortage of fresh, uncontaminated produce in stores that I know of...
I work, too-and I brought up my kids in health and safety, and I’ve found more than enough time and info to maintain a healthy lifestyle for me and mine-I do not ever attempt to impose it on anyone else-it is an individual choice and responsibility.
You put the contract to test out for bids-just like the government puts contracts out for bid right now. With competition, the price comes down-it is our tax money anyway-better to have it spent for independent study than throwing it down the bureaucratic rathole of the FDA, which is totally corrupt and lobbied. Bundlers can only cease to exist when enough of us have the balls to vote with our wallets and stop electing purveyors of pork to represent us...
You’re not the biggest addict but you’re still an addict.
You’re not Madam Cleo but you’re a statist moron.
Ban e-cigarettes! Support cigarette smoking and the associated tax revenue.
Sponsored by the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and other Party Products.
However will the children learn to inhale before they take their first hit of harmless weed?
Nice takeback.
Fine the crap out of adults who inflict their kids on the rest of us, so they get the message-regulation just makes them think they are victims who need to be taken care of by taking freedom-and money-from the rest of us. We are not responsible for them, or their kids, and we don’t need to be-make a bad choice and don’t watch your own kids, sorry but it is your responsibility, pay the fine. I’m fresh out of sympathy...
I remember bubble gum cigars. They made a lot of those as I recall.
Sure is and they will make up the loss of tax revenue from their successful campaign against cigarettes. This is another ah-ha government moment.
-— Who do you propose hire the independent companies? I can’t afford that -—
It would create a market niche for an inspection agency. Bribe-taking would instantly kill their business, so the company would have a strong incentive to rate products fairly. Businesses would brag about receiving the “Consumer Reports Seal of Approval.”
Moreover, there would exist niche agencies for vegetarians, vegans, Kosher, Atkins, etc.
I remember when people couldn’t imagine telecommunications without Ma Bell.
so is Pepsi
There is no stink at all
"I'd rather the FDA spend a few dollars making sure your vapors are reasonably safe"
I'd rather other people stop deciding what is best for me
"I'd rather the FDA make the liquid nicotine containers safer so that your kids don't suffer anymore from your stupidity than they have to. "
Thanks, but I'm not stupid. I know how to keep my kids out of the poison.
