This story is pretty sickening. They are saying it will take decades to sort out, which means he'll be long dead before they decide whether to give any of it back.

Unlikely. Fermi was born in 1901 in Rome, which would have made him about 21 years older than the man with the collection. I believe what is meant is that he graded papers FOR Fermi, Fermi being the Professor. That's what graduate students do for their professors.

Even so, he did. I don't remember, it was a long time ago, but I think Fermi was at the Institute for Advanced Study with Einstein and Oppenheimer. They hold to have study groups and papers were graded.
