Suspected Fort Hood shooter dead; situation ongoing
CNN ^ | Wednesday, April 2, 2014 | Dana Ford

(CNN) -- A suspected shooter at Fort Hood, Texas, is dead, but the situation is still considered an active scene, multiple U.S. officials told CNN on Wednesday.

"There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported. Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time," the Army post said in an evening statement.

Fort Hood's official Twitter feed asked that all personnel on post shelter in place. Sirens were going off.

President Barack Obama has been briefed on the incident and will continue to receive updates, according to a White House press pool report. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel also was monitoring the situation.

Deke Jones, with Scott & White Memorial Hospital, told CNN his facility was receiving patients.

"I don't have a number," he said.

Sheriff's deputies from Bell County and state troopers are assisting by securing the area around the post, according to Bell County Sheriff's Lt. Donnie Adams.

Authorities in the town of Killeen, just outside the gates, are also standing by to help, said Mayor Dan Corbin.

"It is unclear what is going on right now," Corbin said. "We have been in touch with appropriate personnel, we are standing by with our police and ambulances, if needed. We are very concerned. Fort Hood is always there for us and we want to be there for them."

He continued: "They are used to dealing with combat situations, and I'm sure they are very capable of handling this."

I’ve had some decent finds in my 16 years here, but this info was from friends on twitter.

More:

He suffered from behavior and mental health issues per Lt. General Milley. Served in combat.

I have to say, you have one of the most interesting ‘about me’ pages here on FR. Maybe not as interesting as Laz’s page but it could be!

“was undergoing treatment for PTSD. He served four months in Iraq before working at Fort Hood.”

In other words, saw no combat recently, I’m assuming.

I have had Latino students with the name Ivan ...it is not that rare, although it seems strange. But don’t read too much into it. ;)

Recent combat doesn’t mean he did or didn’t suffer PTSD. This is a terrible tragedy whether it was terrorism or a soldier suffer from mental illness. Actually the lack of care for our Wounded Warriors and those who suffer PTSD pisses me off. I am positive there are many more ticking time bombs with PTSD walking the streets of America. Same as those who returned from Vietnam. I cant tell you how many Vietnam Vets I have known who came back paranoid, depressed, withdrawn, odd etc. Very sad that once again we have turned our backs on these brave men and women.

Wrong. The guy named Booker/Muhammed is in a mental hospital.Obviously, he was considered a danger even 2 days ago,as per Jana Winters’ story reprinted on FR. Shooter is Ivan Lopez whose pic can be seen on International Business Times story by Maria
Vultaggio.

PTSD does not carry with it a propensity to hurt others.

KT McFarland was on Hannity screeching about how this was the second time PTSD and our neglect of soldiers has hit Ft hood

No. Hasan did not suffer from PTSD. He had a Jihad. I’t a bit damned different.

Nam one person who shot everyone dt PTSD. Mc Veigh? OK that was 20 yrs ago and the evidence shows, just by the swiftness with which he was tried and executed, he was not alone.

Anyone else? NO

This is so bad the way they’ll spin it with the help of commenters who don’t know about {TSD

THey are champing at the bit to corral everyone in as about to shoot everyone.

I can’t remember the Navy seals name that was shot and killed by another
service person he was trying to help with PTSD!! This Navy seal was very well known to ALL FREEPERS wish I could remember his name! However this sort of thing does happen with PTSD, I for one would blame
the typical meds they had this person on, seems all of these mass shootings are done be individuals on some sort of antidepressants!!

I was married to an army officer for 32 years. He was drafted during the Vietnam War, so I have met many who have served. I worked in an army hospital, as an RN, during the Vietnam War....treating many wounded.

I still have base privileges, so for many years I have volunteered for the USO. I see, meet, and talk with troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have watched how they have been treated upon their return. I don’t agree with you when you say we have turned our backs on them.

How are you involved with the troops? What made you come to this conclusion?

I DO NOT believe the citizenry has turned their backs on them, however
the VA has definitely neglected their duty to them typical government
bureaucracy at it’s best! What we ALL have to look forward to in OUR
future healthcare!!! Just ask the vets!!!

I’m not saying PTSD is an excuse to kill or hurt others. It’s no secret the current administration is not doing all they can to help those who come back with problems....physical or mental. It appears to me from what I have seen and heard from employees at the VA hospital is there are backlogs. That is sad and unexcuseable. We spend freely on those who sit on their asses all day but penny pinch for those who serve.

“Just ask the vets!!!”

Not sure what you’re getting at, but the vets are taken care of IF they ask for the care. I know that for a fact.
