I don’t get it either. They mate in the fall and baby deer are born about 10 months later. As long as the adults have enough food to eat throughout the year it should not make much difference, since babies suckle from the mother anyway.

So if spring comes two weeks earlier, that means that mama deer gets two extra weeks of eating time to put on some fat reserves before giving birth and having to produce milk. It should INCREASE survival rates.
