Perhaps it really is just a boat in distress, but is it possible it’s a boat spotting something suspicious? Trying to get out some comms that someone should come and inspect?
From what I'm reading this is a distress beacon meaning automated once activated. Several reasons to use it. Primary radio comm should be tried first as much more info can be relayed. If main communications is disabled say due to power loss then the beacon is activated and would simply give Lat, Long, and possibly an identifier. It likely would not give nature of problem and could be located on the boat or on the life rafts.
Thank you for not being cynical. Someone out there made a distress call. The missing aircraft is certainly lost by this time but, stranger things have happened in the history of people lost at sea and then recovered.
I pray.
Perhaps it is the global warming research vessel that was trapped in the ice (December/January). The crew has figured out that we have forgotten all about them.
